About Virginia
Virginia Phillips, an award-winning painter, grew up in Chicago and moved to
Indiana in 1960. For 55 years, she has been an interior designer for Marc
T. Nielsen Interiors, first in Chicago and later in the Suman Valley, near
Valparaiso, Indiana.
During her career as an interior designer, Virginia kept painting. In
recent years, after attending a workshop by artist Harriet Rex Smith at the
Art Barn School of Art, she has become a more serious painter, Her work is
deeply influenced by the German Expressionist style of painting of another
teacher, Konrad Juestal.
Virginia works in oil on stretched canvas. Most of her work is landscapes,
still lifes, and an occasional portrait. Her main form of expression is
color, with varying degrees of abstraction. Her paintings have been
identified as in the style of Matisse, Gauguin,
and VanGogh.
Virginia's work may be found in collections throughout the United States and
abroad, and the National MS Society has used several of her images as
notecards and table favors for National conventions.
She is currently working on a series of paintings called "Sky, Lake, and
Dunes."
